The 'Kardiac Kids': Pure excitement

At the start of the 1980s, the Cleveland Browns were led by a group of scrappy, determined football players known as the “Kardiac Kids.” They were given that nickname because of their tendency to snatch victories from the jaws of defeat during very tightly-contested games.

During the 1980 season, the Browns figured in several contests that were won in the final minutes. It was also the most successful season the Browns have been in for almost a decade. For the past eight years, the team had not made it into the playoffs.

One of the more memorable games of the Kardiac Kids was against the Cincinnati Bengals, who led by 10-0 after the first half. The Browns would end up winning a humdinger of a game, and the Central title, by a razor-thin margin, 27-24. It was the Don Cockroft-kick with less than one-and-a-half minutes remaining that sealed it for the Browns.

However, the celebrations would come to a heartbreaking and abrupt halt when the Kardiac Kids came up against the mighty Oakland Raiders in a match dubbed as the Red Right 88 Game. With only a few seconds remaining, the Browns were down 14-12. What looked like a perfect pass from Brian Sipe to the waiting Ozzie Newsome, was intercepted, ending all hopes of a championship.
